Description | JOB TITLE: School Nurse
REPORTS TO: Director of Student Support Services/Principal
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The School Nurse is a registered professional nurse licensed by Louisiana and certificated by the Department of Education who strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children. The school nurse is responsible for providing an array of services and completing state mandated tasks including conducting screenings for vision and hearing, immunization audits, composing health care plans, health program instruction, making health referrals, and maintaining health records.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Conducts vision and hearing screenings on all grade level students required by state mandates, as well as those students referred

Works with parents in referring students to appropriate medical services when necessary and assists families in carrying out the recommendations made

Provides technical assistance to school system staff and, when required or needed, in-service training to school personnel and parents relative to school health concerns

Conducts and makes available health instructional programs to schools including such topics as communicable diseases, nutrition, personal hygiene, first aid, and other topics appropriate to specific grade level/student/staff needs

Manages and follows through on student health referrals made by teachers, students, school administrators, counselors, pupil appraisal personnel, and parents

Conducts student health assessments, which may include health history, physical
assessments, review of written assessment reports, and Individualized Health Care Plans

Attends IEP meetings for students with special needs when necessary

Assesses need for new or improved school health programs and services and presents proposals to meet those needs to the Director of Student Support Services

Keeps abreast of current trends and practices in the field of school nursing and school health services

Ensures that the Director of Student Support Services is fully informed regarding school nursing and school health services programs by providing information, recommendations, reports, and information which will allow for a critical review of the programs

WORK ENVIRONMENT/WORK HOURS:
Individual is required to work in an office setting with a climate-controlled environment subject to School Board energy policy guidelines. The length of the workday consists of hours assigned by the superintendent and could vary as the result of day/evening activities or emergencies
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

Must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing

Must be able to think critically, accurately compile and interpret data, summarize information, and provide reports to the appropriate administrator or supervisor

Must have the ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system and must be able to communicate successfully with children, parents, staff, school personnel, and outside agencies
EQUIPMENT USED:
Titmus vision screener, audiometer, sphygmomanometer, blood glucose meter, otoscope, pulse oximeter, stethoscope, nebulizer, telephone, computer, copy machine, facsimile machine
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:

Standing, sitting, walking, reaching, bending, and moderate lifting may be required

Must be able to provide own transportation to schools, work locations, and meetings

Must be able to travel to various locations and move freely within work sites

Must have sufficient visual acuity to be able to work with computer monitors, read and interpret hand written documents, etc.

Must be able to provide legible written reports

Must have the ability to maintain accurate records, and plan and implement appropriate educational programs

Must be able to follow local, state, and federal guidelines regarding School Nursing and Health Related Services

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have a current Louisiana license as a registered professional nurse, an ancillary certificate issue by the Department of Education, and a minimum of two years experience as a registered nurse
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
9 month employee
EVALUATION:
Shall be evaluated in accordance with the Zachary Community School Board Personnel Accountability Plan
