Competencies and Performance Standards will be used for counselor evaluation in conjunction with measures of student growth. Measures of student growth will be aligned with Louisiana Law and BESE Policy.
SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To plan and implement a program which creates an environment where students can learn and develop optimally.
- To administer tests, interpret scores, and maintain other records pertinent to better understanding of student achievement and potential.
- To assist individual students through the counseling relationship to utilize their own resources and environmental opportunities in the process of self-understanding, planning, decision making, and coping with problems relative to student developmental needs and vocational and educational decisions
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Implement appropriate JTCC activities designed to help students establish personal goals and develop future plans. (See ZCSB JTCC PLAN)
Domain 1: Planning and Preparation- 1C-Setting Instructional Outcomes

The counselor values, sequences and aligns curriculum enabling students to build their understanding of important ideas from concept to concept.

The counselor designs and structures lessons so that learner outcomes are at an appropriate cognitive level.

Other:
- Provides activates and experiences for students to develop career-related goals
- Monitors student academic performance, behavior, attendance and facilities appropriate interventions
- Provides individual counseling in a confidential setting.
- Provides small group counseling sessions in a confidential setting
- Implements developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school goals.
- Implements an effective referral and follow-up process as needed.
- Participates in the School Building Level Committee
WORK ENVIRONMENT/HOURS WORKED:
- Required to work in a school setting with a climate-controlled environment subject to School Board energy policy guidelines and in outside areas subject to climate extremes
- The length of the workday varies from the length of the school day to extend days as the result of evening activities or emergencies.
- Job responsibilities may require work on weekends or holidays and attendance at meetings other than the location of the school site
COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
- Must be able to effectively communicate in Standard English both orally and in writing. Communication must be commensurate with age and skill of listener
- He/she must be able to give and receive information accurately via a telecommunication system
- He/she must be able to communicate effectively with students, parents, school personnel, and the public in both individual and group situations
- He/she must be able to access data, to summarize information accurately, and to provide written reports to his/her supervisor
EQUIPMENT USED:
- Must be able to use computer, keyboard, printer, facsimile machine, copy machine, public address system, audio visual equipment, security alarm system and other appropriate machines
PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
- Able to perform these physical activities: standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting 50 pounds is sometimes required
- Able to operate classroom equipment
MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
- Able to plan and implement appropriate educational programs for all students and teachers
- Able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions
- Keep accurate, up-to-date written records
- Able to comply with state and parish regulations
- Able to utilize effective classroom management techniques
HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:
- Must be able to work cooperatively with students, teachers, parents, school personnel, and the community
- Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept commendations and recommendations
- Must demonstrate sensitivity/understanding in interpersonal relations with persons of diverse cultures/backgrounds
MNIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Meet requirements as outlined in Louisiana Bulletin 746: Louisiana Standards of State Certification of School Personnel
